Description

While still trying to image through somewhat lightening smoke here in the midwest, I was able to capture a the Lion Nebula over the last several weeks.  I have been more tired lately and just spend an entire night on each filter.

As I was editing it, my son said it looked like our family aussiedoodle Astro. As I continued to edit, it looked more an more like the little triceratops Sara from Land before time. I guess my mind is still on kids movies as that permeates our season of life with little kids.

My normal method for processing left me wanting and I tried a new method with tone mapping for this image with better than expected results.   I appreciated Eric Coles and Tim Hutchison with their recent tutorial on the Astro-Imaging-Channel. I used a Ha luminance layer and then used the Ha stars. I over cooked the star reduction slightly on this version and will have to go back and work on it later.

I fell into the normal trap of trying to make my version look like really superb one on astrobin  (Terry Hancock's from earlier this year) with better skies and better equipment. I keep trying to find a way to only add the medium and large stars back in while eliminating the small stars that distract from the nebula which make his version pop.

There is not a whole lot of details about the nebula that I could easily find. It's located 10k to 12k light years from earth in the constellation of Cephas.  The large Hydrogen and Oxygen nebula clouds are being irradiated by large super hot Wolf -Reyaet  star WR 153ab.

Title: Dec 2022 Revision with Updated Processing Techniques with Increase Detail

Description: Full redo edit. Used blurX and NoiseX in the non linear phase. Also used SPCC for stars by applying it's narrowband application and stretching those stars to then blend with the SHO stretch. The Detail improvement is astonish at both small and full scale.
